How Human Consciousness Differs from Animal Awareness

Every animal is awake, alert, and responsive to the world around it. Like us, they experience life through sensory input. They see, hear, smell, taste, and feel the world and react to it immediately. In this way, we experience life exactly as they do: moment by moment, through our senses. These sensations stir our feelings and thoughts, creating the experience of emotion. Our thoughts then influence our behaviors, and our actions provoke new feelings as the responses that follow.

But animals respond to life almost entirely through instinct. Their emotions, behaviors, and responses unfold rapidly and unconsciously. If all we knew was the present moment, our lives would be similar. We would act only to meet the basics of survival, food, shelter, safety, and reproduction. We would feel emotions, but we would not reflect on them, we would behave without questioning them, or respond without considering their impact. We would not imagine a future or worry about consequences, because past and future would hold no meaning.

Animals live this way because they cannot perceive the influence of time and energy, our Limited Resources, upon their existence.. Without this awareness, they do not store knowledge with intention, they do not plan, they do not imagine, and they do not feel responsible for tomorrow. What they learn is consumed immediately to survive. When their needs are met, they rest in simple contentment—sometimes even joy. But they never reach for the elusive happiness that the human ego seeks, because they do not possess the ability to want for anything else.

Humans experience the same world through the same senses, but something extraordinary sets us apart:

We are aware of our awareness.

This capacity emerges from our three Gifts:

  • Our physical Gift gives us awareness of our actions and propels our impulses to meet our needs.

  • Our emotional Gift gives us awareness of our feelings and directs our intention to satisfy what it is we want.

  • Our spiritual Gift gives us awareness of our thoughts and allows us to implement decisions to create what it is we desire, one at a time.

As this awareness evolved, humans became capable of love, enabling us to share knowledge both intellectually and intuitively, something no other species can do.

This expanded consciousness allows us to:

  • recognize the impact of time and energy

  • gain knowledge unknowingly through intuition

  • store knowledge with intention

  • imagine futures that do not yet exist

  • reflect upon past experiences

  • anticipate consequences

  • choose our next action, feeling, or thought

These capacities form the basis of:

  • Consciousness – awareness of what we are doing, feeling, and thinking now

  • Memory – stored knowledge, gained knowingly or unknowingly, to be used with intention.

  • Imagination – projecting possibilities into the future

  • Free Choice – directing our next step in life by deciding for ourselves what we would like to do, feel, or think next.

Animals operate primarily from instinct, driven by the unconscious. Humans add intellect and intuition to regulate the F.A.S.T.instinct, through the unconscious, conscious, and subconscious levels of mind. Animals have needs and can feel contentment. Humans, aware of time and energy, pursue needs, but move beyond, to the Satisfactions of our wants and desires—leading to contentment, happiness, and joyfulness, a far more complex emotional landscape.

But this extraordinary gift comes with a cost:

Our consciousness affects everyone else.

Because we can imagine, regret, anticipate, and remember, we suffer in ways animals never do. Our ego can chase wants endlessly. Our intuition can be ignored. Our thoughts and feelings can pull us away from the present moment and into ANXIETY about a future that has not yet arrived.

The backtothepresent.net model restores balance by reconnecting us with what animals never lose, presence, while honoring the extraordinary human capacity for conscious choice.

Through the model:

  • Our physical Gift fuels the impulses that meet needs.

  • Our emotional and spiritual Gifts give us awareness of our feelings and thoughts, directing intention and enabling implementation.

  • Our Unique Abilities, conscious awareness and free choice—allow us to direct our Limited Resources with intention.

  • Our Manifestations (actions, feelings, and thoughts) become guided by loving intention rather than impulsive F.A.S.T. EMOTIONS.

  • We shift from impulse → intention → implementation, making decisions one conscious moment at a time.

In short:

Animals survive.
Humans create.

Animals react.
Humans choose.
