Mindfulness Exercise: Using the Obligations to Return to Presence

Every moment of your life, you are doing three things.
You are doing something, feeling something, and thinking something.

That’s called being human.

The problem isn’t emotions.
The problem is when we make decisions too fast.

In Back to the Present, we use four Obligations to slow life down—just enough to choose well.

First: Awareness.
Pause and ask: What am I doing, feeling, and thinking right now?

Second: Challenge.
Am I about to act on fear, anger, sadness, or temptation?
Am I reacting… or choosing?

Your awareness creates presence.
Presence creates space.
And space gives you choice.

Third: Patience.
You’re still learning.
Your physical, emotional, and spiritual gifts take time to grow.
Time and energy are limited—don’t give them away to impulse.

And finally: Honor.
Choose what you do next.
Choose how you want to feel next.
Choose what you think next.

So ask yourself—
Why would I choose to suffer…
when I can choose to return to the present?

Purpose

To help students make better decisions by using the ObligationsAwareness, Challenge, Patience, and Honor—so they can return to the present moment, use their time and energy wisely, and reduce unnecessary anxiety.

Foundational Reminder

In every moment, you are always doing three things:

  • You are doing something (physical)

  • You are feeling something (emotional)

  • You are thinking something (spiritual)

These are called your manifestations.
Because you can notice them, you have conscious awareness.
Because you can change them, you have free choice.

Step 1: Awareness — Come Back to the Present

Pause.

Ask yourself:

  • What am I doing right now?

  • What am I feeling right now?

  • What am I thinking right now?

Do not judge.
Just notice.

Awareness brings you back to the only moment where life happens—the present.

Step 2: Challenge — Pause Before You React

Ask yourself:

  • Am I about to act on fear, anger, sadness, or temptation?

  • Am I reacting… or am I choosing?

Now check in with your three Gifts:

  • What am I about to do? (physical)

  • What am I feeling? (emotional)

  • What am I thinking? (spiritual)

Your awareness of what you are doing, feeling, and thinking creates presence.
Presence creates space.
Space gives you choice.
Choice allows you to create a better outcome.

Remember: emotions are not here to make decisions for you.
They are here to help you decide how you want to feel after the right decision is made.

Step 3: Patience — Give Yourself Time to Choose Well

Remind yourself:

  • I am still learning.

  • My physical, emotional, and spiritual gifts grow over time.

Patience means understanding that time and energy are limited resources.
If you rush, you give your choice away to impulse.
If you pause, you keep your power.

Patience helps you stay present long enough to choose instead of react.

Step 4: Honor — Choose What Comes Next

Now ask:

  • What would I like to do next?

  • What would I like to feel next?

  • What would I like to think next?

Choose in a way that honors:

  • your physical gift by being productive,

  • your emotional gift by protecting peace,

  • your spiritual gift by choosing purpose.

This is how loving intention shows up in real life.

Closing Reflection

Every moment offers a choice.
When we rush, we often create anxiety.
When we pause, we create clarity.

Ask yourself:

Why would I choose to suffer… when I can choose to return to the present?

Use the Obligations.
Come back to presence.
Choose on purpose.
