Mindfulness Exercise: The Ladder of Satisfaction Our Needs, Wants, and Desires

Step 1: Draw a Ladder with Three Rungs.
Label them from bottom to top:

  • Needs (basic essentials, for your well-being: food, shelter, safety)

  • Wants (things that bring comfort, convenience, or entertainment and amusement)

  • Desires (things that promise deep emotional or spiritual reward in our relationships with others)

Step 2: Choose a recent decision you made.
Ask yourself:

  • Did I make that choice to meet a need?

  • Was I chasing a want?

  • Was it really about a deeper desire—like being loved, admired, or feeling free?

Step 3: Reflect.

  • Did that choice bring me contentment (meeting a need)?

  • Did it make me happy (getting a want)?

  • Did it lead to joyfulness (fulfilling a deeper desire)?

Write a one-sentence insight. For example:

ā€œI realized I bought that new hoodie not because I needed it, but because I wanted to feel confident—and what I really desired was to be noticed.ā€

ā€œEvery day I make choices to meet my needs, chase my wants, or fulfill my desires. When I understand the difference, I choose with intention—and I find more joy.ā€
