Gentle Reminder Exercise: From Self-Care to Karmic Merit
Use this practice whenever you feel your tendency to people please results in you being pulled to over-give, over-commit, or keep the peace at your own expense.
Step 1: Return to Presence-Always
Pause for one breath.
Notice:
What am I doing?
What am I feeling?
What am I thinking?
Presence restores conscious awareness and interrupts automatic people-pleasing.
Step 2: Check Your Limited Resources
Remind yourself:
My time and energy are limited. Once they are spent, they cannot be recovered.
Ask:
Do I have the capacity for this right now?
Will this choice cost me rest, peace, or honesty?
Step 3: Look Into Your Toolbox First
Before extending loving intention outward, check whether you are practicing it inward.
Ask:
Am I being honest with myself?
Am I respecting my limits?
Am I caring for my physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being?
If loving intention toward self is missing, pause. Refill your Toolbox before giving to others.
Step 4: Scan for F.A.S.T. Emotions
Notice whether your impulse is driven by:
Fear of conflict or rejection
Anger from unspoken resentment
Sadness from feeling unseen or unappreciated
Temptation to keep the peace just to reduce discomfort
If F.A.S.T. emotions are present, delay your response.
Step 5: Choose With Integrity
Respond only when your choice feels honest and sustainable.
You may say:
āI need time to think about this.ā
āI want to help, but I need to be realistic.ā
A clear response protects both your well-being and your relationships.
Step 6: Extend Altruism Intentionally
When your needs are acknowledged and your choice is free, extend loving intention outward.
Giving from this place creates karmic merit rather than karmic burden. Your actions, feelings, and thoughts move into the world without resentment, anxiety, or self-loss.
Closing Reflection
Ask yourself:
Did my choice honor my time and energy?
Did I love myself before loving others?
Did my action reduce Anxiety or quietly build it?
When presence guides your choices, relationships remain healthy, Anxiety softens, and loving intention flows outward with clarity and peace.
